Sunday Postcards

I am going through a little hiatus in my creativity so postcards for Fiber Art for a Cause is still a great way to get those brain cells going.

I made these yesterday and really like the texture of the layers of organza with reverse applique and the quilting. Nic Bridges has been doing this technique for a while and I have been meaning to try and it was very satisfying.

Little dots are lovely tactile beads and green striped fabric is silk out of my wonderful scrap bag (actually 4 kg bag) brought back from Bangkok

a singular/synthesis

I went to a new exhibition yesterday with the work of Fiona Wright (above) and Jan Clark (below).
Unfortunately I didn't read the invitation carefully and was a day early. The exhibition was hanging but Fiona and Jan were not ther so I couldn't get a catalogue with names.

I did a felting workshop with Fiona recently and had a wonderful time. I even used some of my pieces in the recent postcards (below).

Jan and Fiona certainly have an amazing synthesis especially evident in a joint work which although demonstrates their individuality works brilliantly together

Fiona has given me permission to post a few photos so I hope you enjoy them. It was extremely difficult not to touch the works as both artists create brilliantly textural work.

For anyone in Sydney who enjoys textile art with texture and colour I really recommend a visit to the
Ewart Gallery - 33 Laurel St Willoughby from August 26 - September 9

Biennale of Sydney

The Biennale is currently on in Sydney. It is an exhibition of Contemporary Visual Art held in Sydney with many venues throughout the city.

I went to the NSW Art Gallery this week and there was some very interesting work although much of it confounded me somewhat but here are some photos.

This is a map of the world made up of layers of a rough calico type fabric. It was really difficult not to touch as it was very tactile

Nike Savvas - Atomic: Full of love, full of wonder. This was the main reason I went to the exhibition and it did not disappoint. The whole room shimmered and vibrated with thousands of individually painted ping pong balls. It was mesmorising

The wall piece was made up of hundreds of pages of Vietnamese Braille pages by Savanhdary Vongpoothorn and again, my hand was itching to touch.

The best use I have seen of fluorescent lights - this corridor was about 50 m long and brilliant to walk through

This work is made out of corregated cardboard rings suspended from the ceiling. The light is from the window behind

Each piece contains a word - not sure of the relevance of each word but the overall effect was wonderful

Postcards

I have been inspired to make some postcards for Virginia Spiegel's Fiber Art for a Cause so here is a brief description of my process for one of them.

I fused a piece of purple silk to Timtex and then ironed some strips of freezer paper around the edge to form a border. I then place a stencil over the postcard and sprinkled bonding powder over the whole thing and removed the stencil.

Then gold foil was place carefully on and ironed. Once it cooled I removed the foil and this is what remained.

Various blue & teal yarns were embroidered onto the postcard using a big darning needle

Finally chip and seed beads were stitched onto the card

It was then trimmed to size and fused to watercolour postcard and zig zag stitched around the edge with variagated thread.

Some other postcards were also finished off today and will be mailed to Virginia today. There are a couple of others half finished so more to come. Great way to play around with new techniques.
