Renovations Day 1

Today we started (ok the builder started) and I was very impressed with the progress.
These two rooms which were originally bedrooms and have recently been a studio and a store room are to be combined to create one large studio.

This is the wall that is coming down. Plaster and lathe and horsehair were the components 100 years ago when this house was built.

The slats were put on first and then the plaster pushed on and through.

By the end of the day we have an indication about the new space.

and what is this you ask - it is a petrified dead rat which we found in the wall cavity.

Alright, I have to stick up for the little guy... he didn't mean to get stuck in the wall! And rodents are so fascinating; there are rodents in deserts, mountains, jungles, tundra, water and, yes, houses. They are highly adaptable little critters. Maybe the next big movie could be Return of the Rat Mummy!

WOW! Wonder how long he's been there? And, I also wonder if people before you didn't notice a smell...
Looking forward to seeing the progress.

Strewth - they didnt worry too much about noggins in those days did they!
And you need antechinuses to get rid of ratty mousey things - they love them! (Antechinuses are those wonderful tiny carnivourous marsupials, dear little faces like tiny kangaroos and savage teeth like needles, famous for rooting themselves to death and leaving pregnant single mums to bring up babies alone. And they don't smell either. Every house should have them in the pantry!).
Keep up with the studio photos please!

Lathe and Plaster walls... how old is the original part of your home I wonder! We had Lathe and plaster walls and ceilings in a home we owned in England, very hard to work with it was.
